What Is a Wide-Beam Headlight on the Mercedes W123?
The term wide-beam headlight, or “Breitbandscheinwerfer” in German, describes the characteristic design in which the different lighting elements are arranged behind one large, continuous lens. This creates the distinctive integrated appearance of the W123 front headlight.
This design differs significantly from the so-called “Ox-Eye” headlights found on early W123 models. The wide-beam headlights give the front of the vehicle a more modern and harmonious appearance and are an important detail for a period-correct restoration.
Why Replace an Old W123 Headlight?
After several decades, original main headlights can show significant signs of ageing. Lenses may become damaged or cloudy, reflectors can deteriorate and moisture may enter the headlight housing. In addition to affecting the appearance, this can also reduce the performance of the vehicle lighting.
Replacing the left headlight helps restore the clean and characteristic appearance of the front end and is particularly useful when restoring or repairing a classic Mercedes W123.
